A few days ago I posted about installing dual POP filters using the Selin elbow kit only to have the filters protrude into the center intake of the JSPEC fascia. If the Nissan air guide was installed in this situation it would be bent forward (by the filters) blocking the fascia’s intake. As an alternative I could have left the portion of the filters inside the intake exposed. Neither choice was appealing. It appeared if I trimmed back the MAF end of the elbows that the filters might no longer extend inside the fascia intake. Then maybe the air guide could be mounted without it blocking the intake. And perhaps the mesh grille could be installed as well. I reinstalled the single POP and I took some measurements of the air guide/fascia opening to give me a standard with which to evaluate the dual MAF setup after elbow trimming. The lower edge of the air guide was about 4 1/2" above the front splash shield. and 4 1/2" from the inner edge of the fascia intake with adjustment for the ruler height About 5/8” of the elbow could be removed before the MAF started to enter into the elbow’s radius. I laid out a straight line for this cut using a square with an adjustable ruler and a ballpoint pen. I trimmed that amount from the elbows with the metal shears pictured below. The shears produced a clean straight edge; not as good as the original but very acceptable. Test fitting the filters revealed that the left and right portions of the air guide would hang below the filters. This has been reported as a cause of stalling [ http://s95014253.onlinehome.us/63104/80397.html ] So I trimmed off part of the air guide under the red line in the pic below: A final test fit of elbows, MAFS and filters had the air guide 5” above the front splash shield and 4” behind the rear of the fascia’s intake, pretty close to the to 4 1/2 x 4 ½“ opening of the single POP air guide. In this position the mesh grille could be installed which when in place reduced the distortion of the guide produced by the pressure of the filters.
The trimming of the elbows repositions the MAFS relative to the bumper support and renders the Selin T-bracket useless. Even a shim between it and its companion center brace can’t be used since there is not enough space between the two filters for the T- bracket. I’m hoping the strength of the elbows and the air guide is sufficient to keep the filters in place. Woo hoo for now.
