I read about blown turbos, seals going, bearings going, turbos smoking, metal chips, etc. but how are turbos supposed degrade over time if they're properly maintained and not overstressed? Clearances open up? Bearings wear out? Impellor gets gummed up? What's the impact on performance? If I got new turbos would I expect to see an increase in performance (everything else being the same)? I think not. All that matters is the boost level, right?
What are the most likely failure modes of turbos and which ones are repairable?
