Piston # seems to be a function of caliper profile vs swept area from what I have seen, take the huge 370Z brakes for instance, four piston caliper, but they are huge and have that large swept area. My wilwoods in contrast also have a large swept area but appear to be much slimmer, necessitating 6 pistons to maintain a comparable swept area. This larger swept area + rotor ventilation & heat dispersion qualities, is what it is all about. These are what make BBKs better than oem brakes, the # of pistons are more of a side-effect of the design. I can't remember which car it was, (I thought it was the carerra gt, but it isnt) it may be one of the //M models, but I was surprised to see two-piston rear brakes and four piston fronts when the competitors were all sporting 6 or 8 piston with 4 in the rear. But then I learned the # of pistons isnt important.
