After removing the parts that connect the handle to the plunger, disassembling the plunger on this jack produced these parts: 
On my jack the o-ring is all that seals the plunger and it nests in a groove in the bore of the threaded part shown. I readily sourced a new o-ring and by inserting the rod into the bore up to the groove (so that the ring could not go down the bore past the groove) I was able to install the new o-ring in less than a minute. You may need a deep socket and a breaker bar (or impact wrench) to get the plunger apart. But other than that, a repair like this for a leaking plunger can be done for about $.50 plus the cost of more hydraulic jack oil. .
