before ripping into the engine have you changed oil to a heavier weight to see if that helped? If its a collapsed lifter a thicker weight oil the majority of the time does the trick. If its a lifter that has just shit the bed then its time to replace them.
Now would be the perfect time (if you diagnose its lifter tick) to do a 60K kit, PCV hose(s) replacement and a coolant by pass ect ect. Me personally I wouldn't upgrade cams just yet until you get some form of porting/machining done to allow the cams to do their job properly. Outside of that one step at a time.
