First off, let me just say that when I bought this car back in 2004 I knew it had a salvage title and the history behind the car. Fast forward to Jan 1, 2009. After taking the car out of storage I logged onto Esurance's website and bought some insurance so I could go through the hassle of emissions testing and then register it. No problems. Then fast forward again to today. I get an email from Esurance telling me that they were dropping my insurance as of the 24th of January because it had a salvage title (technically 'rebuilt' in the state of Nevada). So I bitched at them a bit (as they'd already taken my money and at no point asked if it had such a title). Anyway, they said I'd be refunded the remaining part of the insurance. Additionally, they put me in contact with a clearing house to get some replacement insurance. After running the phone tree for about 15 minutes I finally started talking to an insurance agent who set me up with a policy from Progressive (something I could have done myself thank you very much). Now here's the valuable info. Apparently, I wasn't the first person this week to have this happen to them. He inferred that many insurance companies are no longer insuring cars that have such titles. He also pointed out that the companies are checking the total history to make sure that the title hasn't been washed. Anyway, this doesn't effect most people as they don't have 'rebuilt' or 'salvage' titles. However, if you think about this on the big picture, it may have ramifications with regards to restored or rebuilt cars. Just thought I'd share.
