After adding in a '99 J-Spec fascia, I removed the rock guard on each of the sides, but came to the conclusion that the rear bumper would be better served to have it filled in smooth, versus sanded down smooth. It takes so much of the potential downside out by filling it in, b/c you don't run the risk of going too thin, or a bad heat or burn spot from the friction of a power sander. Now if you want to spend the time, it can (and usually is done) by hand-sanding. Mine filled in turned out gorgeous, and I don't see why the time need be wasted on sanding it. And yes, she'll be getting a 3M clear bra where the rock guard used to be at the end of this month. No reason to tempt fate with a new paint job.
