Message Sway bars help to translate weight from one side of the car to the other. They act more like spring than a brace. That being said, I wouldn't upgrade sway bars on another car again. They DRASTICALLY change the driving characteristic of the car, more so than shocks and springs. I'd list suspension upgrades as follows in order of importance:
1) Tires
2) Adjustable upper arms (camber)
3) Chassis Bracing
4) Shocks/Springs
5) Sway Bars

Just my experience.
