| At the monthly Colorado Z club meeting last night, it was brought up that Denver had been approached to host the 2009 event. A few issues have come up that I would like some feed back on. It seems the trend now is that the event be over Labor Day weekend, Friday-Sunday. Seems the norm has been Friday track day, Sat car show, Sunday a nice drive, tour, etc. Car show is nothign to worry about, and we have plenty of great moutain roads to drive on. I voiced my opinion (and I wasn't alone it seems) that I think the biggest draw to these types of events lately seems to be the track day. So the main issues are surrounding the track day and how that would be handled. As most of you know by now the Denver area now has a new track that will be opening next year, High Plains Raceway. The Colorado Z club has 2 dates reserved for 2009. Unforunately our September date is the weekend after Labor Day, Sept 12th. SCCA has the Labor weekend reserved already. While we do have other tracks in the area, I feel most people would want to come to drive the new track. This is where the issues come into play. We could host the event the weekend after Labor day. This way we have the new track reserved already, although it wouldn't be on a Friday (would be Sat or Sun which personally I like this better as I never understood the logic of having a track day the day before the car show. Not much time to get the cars cleaned up). The issue this causes is people would not have that Monday as a holiday. Most people attending use Monday as the time to drive home. It's one less day they need to take off from work. Also people may have school on that Monday which would be effected as well. As mentioned we have other tracks in the area. So we could host the event on Labor Day weekend and use another track. This causes an issue for the club ourselves. This would mean we would be paying for 2 track events 2 weekends in a row which finacially would be hard on the club. Not even sure if that would be possible. Plus we are already sheling out money to pay for the event. The Zclub is renting the new track no matter what on the 12th so we are already tied into payng that bill what ever it may be. The new track is rumored to be very expensive. But on the other hand the Denver area has been VERY VERY spoiled when it comes to track day prices. $50-65 payment for a track day currently doesn't come close to what others are paying around the country. But this goes along with my next issue. The other track that would be considered would be the Colorado State Patrol Track that we currently use. This is a very mild track compared to the new one and others people are used to. And in my opinion can become boring very fast unless you are new to track driving. It's basically a large triangle with one leg that has a cut in. Not very technical and great for beginners, but again kinda blah. But the price would be in the lower range we have been paying which might appeal to lots of people. But seeing the track prices people have been paying I don't think a higher price (for the new track) would be too much of a turn off. We also have PMI south of Colorado Springs which just recently reopened. First thoughts are this will be a very expensive track as well and I doubt this track will be considered. We have PMI in Pueblo but you are required to take a safety class before you can use the track so I think that track is out of the question. It was said at the Kansas City event, instead of a track day they had a drag strip day. The issue I see with this is we are talking Denver here, Mile High. High altitude so slower times no matter what. I don't see out of towners that are into drag racing being interested in this much at all. And I guess a general question I'll throw out as well is how many people would be interested in even coming to Denver for this event. Please reply with your thoughts and other questions you may have. We have not accepted the offer 100% yet and mentioned I would throw out some questions and get some feedback to take back to the board. Thanks.
