True, you can't raise the impedance of a "speaker" it self by adding resistors, but you can raise the impedance of the amp channel attached to that speaker.

If you have two 4-ohm speakers, and you connect them + to + and - to -, then attach that system to the amplifier, the amplifier "sees" a 2-ohm load.

If you wire them like the diagram below, on the left labeled “Series” your amp will see an 8 ohm load.

All aftermarket head units with built in amplifiers are designed for 4 ohm loads (automotive industry standard). Driving a 8-ohm load will reduce your power output, but the amp will run cooler. Running a 2-ohm load will increase power output, but the amp will run much hotter. Running a 1-ohm load is amp-icide.

Adding resistors, even in series, is foolish and, IMO, ghetto. This will save your head unit, but will kill your sound quality, as the resistor gets a good amount of power and converts that power not into sound, but into heat.

Your only real solution is to replace the speakers, or as I mentioned before, reconnect the amps and run a converter.

In the mean time, your head unit probably isn’t fried, as you more than likely blew an internal fuse. I’d remove the head unit and check for any accessible fuses.
