Message able to start it last night. Last November I bought a '90 TTZ with a rebuilt engine, a new clutch and some nice 18's (although they are chrome, gag) on it for $800. But the undercarriage was rusted pretty bad. It was also a 5-spd car so I had everything to do a N/A to TT and 5-spd conversion but no N/A body.
Several months later I found a 1990 pearl yellow AT N/A on Craigslist that had some minimal damage for $1000. The right fender dented, the hood was crumpled, the right headlamp was busted and the right intake cam was snapped just behind the gear. After taking the engine apart I found that only a few exhaust valves were bent and the pistons didn't have any marks from being struck. The bottom end turns like butter and there was still fairly new crossshatch in the cylinders. Also, the head was surprisingly not at all damaged by the cam snapping off.
I had sold a nice 2+2 Z to a friend a few years ago and knew that he could use some parts. I called him up and made a deal with him. He hauled away the TT car for parts and gave me $400 for the wheels. I needed some new headlights as well so he got the N/A engine and I got my lights. At this point I am into this swap for about $2000. Some of you know that I have been jobless so money has been tight on this project. I have sent many core parts to Z1 in trade for stuff like injector seals and a full length braided sheilded SS clutch line. After getting the last of the parts neede to put the engine back together I was able to start the car. It runs smooth but I still have some bugs to work out (a vaccum leak and idle issue).
I am excited and wanted to share with you guys the progress on my very low budgeted TT project. I will post pics after some body and paint work. Thanks for the help you have given me. Without this site I would still be trying to figure out how to wire this thing up. Many questions will be in the near future but I will try to keep them in the tech forum.
