Message As I mentioned in my initial reply an electric temp gauge works through electrical resistance typically. The sending unit that you install in the engine varies the ohm load that the gauge sees depending on the temperature that it reads from the engine. This variance is what makes the gauge operate.

Simply put, for ease of installation in a street car electric is usually the better option. Mechanical is typically cheaper and in many cases more accurate, although the better brands of electric gauges are extremely accurate and reliable.
