Now that I look at it again, I wonder if you had it set for, uh, well, I don't recall what the setting is called now because I never use it myself! It's meant for just black-and-white art, no greyscale. Even if I have a pen drawing, I'll use the greyscale setting and tweak it myself. The black and white setting tends to kill nuances in detail. If you want to know more, I'll check out the scanner at work tomorrow and see if I can find what it calls these settings.
