Pressure with flow rate. As stated cold oil is thick and requires greater pressure to move the same amount in a given time until it reaches operating temperature. All the more reason to put a "light" load on the engine to get up to operating temperature as quickly as possible. I use German Castrol 0w30, which is "true" synthetic (not grp III oil). The 0 means it flows very easily at very cold temperatures; as it warms up it becomes the 30 wt (very close to a 40 wt).
