| You mention you had the paint coming off and such on the drivers side because of brake fluid and such. I had this also, seems to be pretty common as well as corrosion in the battery area. I put down a few layers of truck bed liner first before painting in those areas and along the frame rails. I know the paint can still get eaten off eventually, but it will stop it from getting down to the metal and corroding. Of course I keep my engine bay a little cleaner than it's used to being before I bought it so it's not as much of a worry :) 


After it's painted you can't even tell. Plus once the engine is in and all the other parts, those areas are hard to see anyway.
 I also put the front end up on jack stands. Then I took off the nuts for the shocks and then pushed them down into the fender area and masked off the hole from the bottom. Another tip depending on how and where you are doing the painting. If you spray down the floor with a good deal of water (enough to keep it wet), it makes clean up easier. It will help keep the paint from sticking to the floor and you can basically just sweep it up. It also helps keep the "dust" down.
