Message :Pay above the fine amount by 5-10 dollars. What this does, is "satisfy" the system that your fine was paid and they send you back a check for the amount you paid over.. As long as you don't cash that check the transaction is never completed and you never recieve the point on your DMV.
That is a well-known urban legend ... and it doesn't work. Whether or not you cash the check, they don't care. The check is issued with an expiration date also. Once the expiration date comes, the check is null and void. Nobody knows about the check, their account is not deducted, and as far as they're concerned, it is money in the bank.

The truth behind "someone's" story is, the government works so inefficiently when it comes to tracking all the administrative paperwork. So when it comes time to put a point on your record, the paperwork (yes, I said PAPER) got lost, so whomever came up with the story (err, advice) in the first place got lucky.

But it's all up to you. I know the DMV just put into place a multi-million dollar computer system that interfaces with other agencies of the state government.

:Another piece of advice on tickets, be critical of everything on that ticket as it must ALL be correct at least according to california law. If it is not then look up the laws in your state to see if you have options.
Show me exactly where it says in the CVC that all the information must be correct and I'll believe everything you said.

The best thing to do is to avoid getting the ticket in the first place.
