Origin late 15th century from the verb pass + time, translating in French to passe-temps. Accordingly with the norman influence on the overwhelmingly germanic english language the original spealling was passetime, later shortening to passtime more in accordance with the anglicanized spelling conventions implemented in the language. By the late 19th century the spelling was again shortened to pastime and popularized in modern American literature.
