First car is cheap because it's only liability and second car gets the discounted rate for a multi-car policy. My beaters (had a few at different points in time) were always more expensive than my pleasure car was. For instance my escort with just liability was $1200, and the miata with full coverage was about $300 a year. Even when I had the Z it was the same thing. Z was dirt cheap, but the beater was ungodly expensive. Now it's much cheaper, but I moved out of NJ.
So I agree with you on getting a super cheap beater part, I think that should be a required "mod" anyway.
