Message GROUP BUY: SpeedChanger (Speedo/Tach Calibration Device)

As many who have changed tires/wheel sizes and/or rear end gears know it can be extremely frustrating living with the speedometer not displaying accurately. While this may be acceptable to some I am like many of you very particular about my Z! Up to this point there have really only been a limited number of ways to address getting the speedometer to indicate the actual speed.

1. Change the speedometer pinion gears in the transmission to NA ones. This works well of course for those of you with a Twin Turbo that swapped out your rear end for an NA one but for those of you that have installed the 4.10 rear end gears from LeaderGears.com this will not result in an accurate reading since the NA gears are not the same numerically as the LeaderGears. This is a reasonably simple solution as long as you have a manual transmission. Sadly the NA speedometer pinion gear swap for automatics requires custom fabrication of a mounting washer. Even with this solution the indicated MPH will still be off as it is designed for the NA gears. On top of that unless you install the NA speedometer pinion yourself you have to add in the labor to get it done by a shop and you still won't have the flexibilty that the SpeedChanger provides.

2. Take your Z to a speedometer calibration shop. Good luck with that one! If you are lucky enough to even have one close to where you live it is more unlikely that they have no experience with 300ZX's.

3. Live with it and know that when the speedometer is showing X MPH you have to subtract Y for your actual speed. Not IMHO a good solution.

Add to the above the possibility of throwing off the indicated MPH due to non OEM wheel and tire sizes and the frustration grows.

Having upgraded my Z with LeaderGears.com's 4.10 gears I had been searching for a better solution and after 3 months of research, including during which time I also tried the Stillen Speedo Calibration Box which sadly was not an acceptable solution, am glad to say I have found it!

Installation is extremely simple and removal of the speedometer is not required and may be reversed at any time in the future!
-Disconnect battery negative terminal (safety first!)
-Remove gauge hood hood (two screws)
-Remove electrical connector to speedometer
-Cut VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor wire)
-Splice in the SpeedChanger (it is designed such that it is impossible to do damage and further includes led's to indicate if a fault in the connections is detected)
-Run switched + to the SpeedChanger
-Run ground to the SpeedChanger
-Reconnect negative battery terminal
-Replace gauge cluster hood
-Calibrate via potentiometers. Many ways to do this, easiest being following a friend while they set their cruise control to 60 MPH. Alternatively find a friendly law enforcement officer with a radar gun to clock you.
