I've had experience with both the 300TT & VR4. I own a 300ZX while my brother had the VR4. To put it short they are both completly different animals. To me they shouldnt even classified in the same ballpark. The Z is more of a 'driver' car, while the VR4 is a point and shoot missile. It takes some skill to drive the Z to the limit while the VR4 is very forgiving. Also if you start talking to some of the guys in the different forums ask about common problems that they have had. My brothers car went through 3 trannys in a little under two years. The problem was mostly boneheads at the dealership (factory recall). Anyways the trannys were $7800 each. I've herd from more then one VR4 owner of the car eating trannys for lunch. If I were you I'd highly recomend driving all of the cars and find out what you like the best. Also if you think that owning a car like these is going to be cheep think again. Its all a gamble you might get lucky and find one that was properly taken care of or you could end up with something thats going to cost an arm and a leg. Just like all performance cars they are going to cost some money on preventative maintance, more so then your average NA. On a 10+ year old turbo car your going to want to change all bye pass hoses, and other hoses that are getting old, if you want to bring it up to 'new' condition. Turbo cars run MUCH hotter under the hood then your NA car. The additional heat affects these types of parts.
There are positive and negative points to all of the turbo japanese cars. I'm sure you'll find them if you search the forums. Drive the cars and figure out what you like the best. For me its a pure joy to be behind the wheel of the Z. If not I would have sold it for something else. But this car has become part of me. I'm not letting mine go. In the future I plan on adding some other cars to the stable but the Z is here to stay.
