What is a modified torque converter, and do I want/need one?

A modified torque convertor is a stock torque convertor taken from an Automatic transmission and changed so that the car will rev higher before it spins the tires. In a automatic car when you release the brake and start to apply gas the car will start moving at about 1500 RPM. When a torque convertor is modified the car will not start moving until about 2200 RPM. The advantage of this setup is at the drag strip. There, it will now be able to brake and rev (press the gas) until about 3000 RPM before the tires start to spin or the car starts to move forward. Being able to rev the car this high allows a better launch than possible with the stock torque convertor. The disadvantage of this setup is decreased gas mileage. Since the car now has to rev higher before it starts to move, it will burn more gas during everyday driving. Highway mileage will not suffer very much but stop and go driving will.
